The Seaton Hiking Trail, Petticoat Creek and Greenwood Conservation Area offer further opportunities to absorb nature.

 

Education

Pickering is served by the Durham District School Board and the Durham Catholic District School Board. The public board operates 17 elementary schools and two secondary schools, Dunbarton High School and Pine Ridge Secondary School.  The Catholic board runs seven elementary schools and one secondary school, Saint Mary Catholic Secondary School. Blaisdale Montessori School, a private school chain, has locations throughout Pickering serving children from preschool age to grade 8.

 

Demographics

The province of Ontario has designated Pickering as an urban growth centre. Pickering is home to approximately 95,000 residents but with further development over the next 10 to 15 years particularly north of the city, it is estimated that by 2023, Pickering will be home to nearly 170,000 residents. Pickering is represented by cultures from around the world, adding a unique quality to the community.

Pickering offers recreational and leisure opportunities for all, from children's programs to youth and seniors’ centres. The Pickering Recreation Complex offers a wide variety of activities, from tennis, squash, racquetball, and a weight room, to recreational swimming in the 25-metre pool.  Plentiful parks support activities for all ages including football, soccer, tennis, baseball, basketball, bocce and cricket. Pickering has a strong and economically diverse business community that includes more than 2,000 businesses. Pickering is well known for the Pickering nuclear generating station. Ontario Power Generation, the plants' operator, is the largest single employer in the city.  Pickering is recognized as one of Canada’s best cities for growth companies, citing the following factors: a large young workforce, easy access to big investors, and close proximity to major transportation hubs and post secondary institutions.

 

Shopping

Pickering residents are spoiled for choice with shops and services. There is excellent shopping at Pickering Town Centre with over 200 stores, while First Pro Shopping Centre offers power-centre format shopping and includes Wal-Mart, Sobey’s, and Canadian Tire. All the major grocery banner stores are in Pickering with many open late. The Pickering Annex complex of retailers specializes in home decor. The Pickering Markets is the biggest indoor market of its kind in Canada. Its 540 booths - open all year - offer antiques, electronics, clothing and lots, lots more.
